Design and engineer students and graduates will have the chance to win £30,000 prize money as the James Dyson Award re-opens for entries.

Dyson, who are based in Malmesbury, will begin their search for ingenious inventions on Tuesday March 27 as he opens the window for applications.

It'll be the 14th edition of the award which will now run in 27 countries and regions worldwide and will include Mexico, UAE, Sweden and the Philippines for the first time.

Designers are asked to invent something that solves a problem. This may be a global issue such as world hunger or a frustration from every day life. The important thing is that the solution is an effective and well-thought through solution.

Entries are judged first at the national level – before progressing to the international stage. A panel of Dyson engineers select an international shortlist of 20 entries. The Top 20 projects are then reviewed by Sir James Dyson, who selects the international winner.

The international prize is £30,000 (and £5,000 for their university), £5,000 for two international runners-up and each national winner receives £2,000.

Last year’s International Award went to the 'sKan', a low-cost, early detection melanoma skin cancer device, engineered to prevent misdiagnosis. The Uk winner was 'Petit Pli' – a clothing design which allowed the material to expand in both directions, allowing it to continuously fit children as they grow. Petit Pli’s current designs fit children from six to 36 months.

James Dyson, said: “Young engineers and designers have perspective and unbridled intelligence that makes them incredibly adept at problem solving. Their ideas can easily be dismissed, but if nurtured and celebrated they are transformative. Developing a product or technology is a long and daunting process; the James Dyson Award celebrates the inventive young people embarking on that process. The Award champions our next generation of inventors and will propel them towards future success. I am excited to see what surprising ideas this year’s award brings.”

The deadline to submit entries is July 20 at midnight.
