LAST weekend, Malmesbury Abbey was looted by thieves.

It was a sickening attack that hurt worshippers the most.

The heartless thieves had no regard for the centuries old building which plays such a pivotal role in the life of everybody in Malmesbury.

But to steal donations from the congregation and visitors is among the lowest forms of theft.

People have given their own money that they have worked hard for towards the significantly costly upkeep of the Abbey.

The donations towards these costs associated with running the building means it can be there for future generations to enjoy, just as more than 1,000 years of people have before.

The thieves also made off with communion silverware and, although they probably weren’t after that specifically, this loss damages the Abbey’s community too.

Hopefully the burglars will be caught soon and, while the money is probably lost, the Abbey’s silverware can be rightfully returned.
