A FOND farewell was bid to the vicar of Malmesbury Abbey last weekend as he led his last service in the town.

The Abbey was packed to say goodbye to Reverend John Monaghan who is moving on to pastures new after nearly five years in Malmesbury.

Reverend John has completed his curacy, a period of training that takes between three and four years, and is now taking up a post as a fully-qualified vicar in Bristol.

A leaving party was also thrown on Friday evening as friends and parishioners wished the Reverend and his wife and three children well.

He thanked the people of Malmesbury for making his time in the town so delightful, saying: “As a family we’ve had an amazing time getting to know so many wonderful people.

“Malmesbury is a unique and special place to live, the draw and buzz of the market town, the pubs, the Abbey and the quiet country feel.

“We’ve loved the carnivals, the smiles on the streets and the strong sense of community.

“I’ve seen many people’s lives transformed and it’s been a privilege to journey with people in celebrating through good times, and coming together as a community through difficult times.

“Thank-you for being such a welcoming, hospitable community for our family, we shall miss this special place.”

Malmesbury Abbey said they hope to appoint Reverend Monaghan’s successor soon.
