STAFF at Wiltshire’s first hospice for children have celebrated its opening for care after it passing a registration and inspection from the Care Quality Commission.

It was all smiles as youngsters joined nurses and carers for songs, messy play with foam and bubbles, stories, crafts and cuddles at Julia’s House.

Based in Devizes, it is the only place of respite for children who need it in north Wiltshire.

The day also marked the sixth birthday of Joseph Hartley who has a genetic condition affecting his muscles and was presented with a chocolate cake by staff.

Joseph’s mum, Liz, said: “It has been really lovely.

“Joseph couldn’t wait to visit and it is such a safe place for him, it is like a second home.”

The dream to provide first class facilities for Wiltshire children with life-limiting illnesses and support for their families has finally became a reality after two years of fundraising and a year under construction.

Lead nurse Heather Philpotts said: “It has been an amazing day. This is what we have been building towards for all these years since we first started supporting families in Wiltshire with our community care

“In May we finally had a beautiful, welcoming, fully-equipped hospice building but it was missing a vital ingredient – children. To hear their voices echoing through Julia’s House today has been magical.”

Wiltshire parents will now be able to choose between home and hospice care sessions. Julia’s House Devizes will also host social events for mums, dads and siblings as part of its focus on whole family support.

The next public open day is on Wednesday, September 6. To book a tour, visit juliashouse.org
