A MOTORIST was killed in a head-on collision on the M4 last night after driving the wrong way down the motorway in North Wiltshire.

The incident, which happened at about 10.40pm, took place between junction 17, Swindon West, and 16 for Chippenham and involved several cars.

Police said the driver of a black Audi A3 collided with a number of cars on the eastbound carriage before hitting an Audi A4 head-on.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the other car was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

It is not clear how the driver managed to get onto the wrong carriageway at junction 16, where major roadworks are currently underway.

The motorway was closed until the early hours of this morning while forensic teams carried out investigations.

Police are appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident to come forward by calling 101 and asking for the Tri-Force investigations unit.
