THERE is uncertainty over the future of Malmesbury Indoor Market, with organisers warning that it could close down permanently if it doesn’t receive more support quickly.

The market, which was introduced four years ago and is held in Malmesbury Town Hall, offers independent traders the opportunity to sell their goods by renting a table for £5.

It is aimed at local hobbyists, artists, fundraisers and charities to display and sell their work.

Malmesbury town councillor Julie Exton, who organises the market with her husband Phil, said: “Our aim was to help local tradespeople promote themselves and provide a space in which they could do this.

“It is a community market with a lot of craft stalls as many people who do this cannot afford the bigger markets.”

However, the number of traders and customers has fallen to critical levels in recent months.

The market had to be cancelled in June and there are fears that it could close permanently if more traders don’t come forward.

“We have become a bit stagnant and because of this not so many people come in now”, said Julie.

“I am appealing to local people to use this space and not let the market finish.

"Organisers are appealing for people to bring new ideas to refresh and rejuvenate the market.

“We need a new look and new people who want this to continue”, continued Julie.

“We have our faithful regulars who have been with us throughout but we need more help.

“What would people like to see there and how do we achieve that? “Let’s not lose this service to the people, we give our free time to do this, let’s make this happen.”

The next market is on September 23 with additional markets this year on October 28, November 25 and late night Christmas shopping on December 1.

For a £5 fee, traders receive a stall with table and chairs, free tea and coffee but must do their own advertising.
