A NATIONAL poverty charity is highlighting the need for more support for carers in Wiltshire.

Figures published last month by the Department of Work & Pensions revealed that there are 6,800 people in the county who receive the £62.70 weekly carer’s allowance.

Turn2us is raising concerns about the significant number of carers in financial hardship that are seeking its help.

The charity helps people in financial need get access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and other financial help.

Simon Hopkins, chief executive of Turn2us, said: “We are contacted on a daily basis by those who are caring for someone with a disability and who are struggling to make ends meet.

“Too often carers are not aware of, and receiving, the help that they are eligible for and entitled to. Even when they are, many are finding it hard to cope with the financial strain of being a carer. ”

Carers are able to apply for the carer’s allowance provided they do not earn more than £116 per week.

Turn2us is urging anyone who cares for someone with a disability to get in touch by going to turn2us. org.uk where they can find out details about getting help and support that they are eligible and entitled to.
