SIR DAVID Hempleman-Adams is set to thrill a Malmesbury audience with tales of his remarkable career exploring the world.

He will be holding a lecture on Friday, May 19 at 7pm, titled 'At the mercy of the winds', ahead of the recreation of the Eclipse Flight on the following Sunday.

The original flight, which took place in 1881, saw Victorian explorer Walter Powell, MP for Malmesbury, launch from what is now Cross Hayes car park in a hot air balloon.

Sir David Hempleman-Adams is a veteran of many adventures across the globe.

He was the first person in history to reach the geographic and magnetic North and South Poles and has also climbed the highest peaks in all seven continents, a feat known as the adventurers grand slam.

His lecture, which takes place at the Town Hall, will be a unique opportunity to hear about the challenges he has faced throughout his career while giving a fascinating insight into the world of ballooning.

The evening is part of the Friends of Athelstan Museum's appeal for the restoration of the Moravian Church.

Tickets cost £12 and are available from the Athelstan Museum.
