THIEVES launched a smash and grab raid on Waitrose in Malmesbury over the Easter weekend.

The incident is thought to have taken place between the hours of 11.30pm on Easter Sunday and 12.30am this morning.

An ATM machine was stolen during the break-in but it is not known how much cash was inside at the time.

John Judkins, branch manager, said: “There was a burglary last night where they used vehicles to remove the ATM.

“Wiltshire police were very prompt, they were on the scene in a matter of minutes.

“It’s been very good service from them and forensics who have been down this morning doing what they do.”

The store is operating with seasonal hours today but is otherwise open as normal.

Residents in Malmesbury are also reporting that there was an attempted break-in at the Lloyds bank branch in the town although this has not been confirmed.
