THE sale of a number of garages in a Malmesbury street has angered residents who say they are struggling to find alternative places to park.

GreenSquare Group, which provides housing, regeneration, care and support services across Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, decided to sell the land on which the garages stand, after an internal review.

Tenants who had been using the garages at Bremhilam Rise received a letter of eviction notice from GreenSquare four weeks ago and say they are now left with nowhere to park, other than on streets that are already very busy.

Roger Farnfield, who has owned one of the garages since 2005, said: “We got a letter saying we all had to be out by April 1 because they are selling the property on. I think they can probably build two or three houses on there.

"Malmesbury’s biggest problem is parking, not housing. Parking is the one thing that causes the most problems. Putting 10 or so cars onto the street is not what Malmesbury needs.”

Phil Bowley, GreenSquare’s head of strategic asset management, said: “Following a major review, GreenSquare has made a decision to sell a number of pieces of land at various locations across Wiltshire.

“These sites will be put up for sale in order to raise money to support our core business aims – to provide new quality homes to people in housing need and to reinvest in local communities where we have properties. Once the sites have been sold, it will be up to the purchaser to decide what happens next in each case.”
