A RESIDENT in Cricklade has fallen victim to a scam from an email address claiming to be from the shopping website Amazon.

Fake emails from addresses ‘service@amazon.co.uk’ and ‘confirm-center@amazon-online.co.uk’ were sent to a number of unlucky residents, claiming they had made an order online.

The emails say that recipients have ordered items such as vintage chandeliers, Bose stereos, iPhones, cameras, luxury watches, pearl earrings and expensive alcohol.

They go on to state that if they haven’t authorised the transaction, then they can click on the help centre link to receive a full refund.

The link then leads the unsuspecting recipient to what has been described as an “authentic-looking website” which asks victims to confirm their name, address, and bank card information.

Action Fraud have received several similar reports of the scam.

Amazon have said that suspicious emails will often contain links to websites that look like amazon.co.uk, but aren't, or attachments that prompt people to install software on their computer.

They have also said to look out for typos or grammatical errors.

In addition, Amazon have confirmed they will never ask for personal information to be supplied by email.
