YOUNGSTERS in Minety were inspired by two renowned folk singers recently.

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman hosted a workshop at Minety Primary School this week ahead of their upcoming performance in the village.

The married couple, who are currently holders of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for best duo, taught year four pupils a 100-year-old song about the village, before hosting a writing session with the pupils.

Having devised their own song, the youngsters got to perform with the duo in front of the rest of their school at the end of the day.

Headteacher Sally Greaves said the “joyousness of the occasion was a real pleasure to behold”.

She continued: “They were amazing with the children. They all had so much fun.

“To have the level of musicality from Kathryn and Sean was inspiring.

“The confidence that it gave the children to be able to stand in front of their peers and perform was fantastic.”

The workshop was part of a rural arts grant and organised through Pounds Arts in Corsham.

Kathryn said she enjoyed the day with the Minety pupils.

“We taught them a school that was found and collected in Minety 100 years ago and hasn’t been sung there since,” she said. “They liked that connection.

“It was about them finding the confidence to have a go at writing a song.

“They were quite willing and confident to have a go.

“We’re the parents of two nine-year-olds, so know that age group well.

“It’s always really heartening that at that age, once they get into the idea they can let their imagination run free, they come up with great ideas.

“They worked together beautifully and were a really lovely bunch.”

Kathryn and Sean will be performing at Minety Village Hall at 8pm on Saturday, January 28.

They will be joined by the Minety pupils to perform the songs they wrote and learned together.
