A COACH driver from Minety fulfilled a promise to shave his head for his wife who is battling cancer last weekend.

Barry Teller, 50, went under the razor at Minety Rugby Club on Saturday in an effort to help raise funds for a cancer charity.

Speaking about why he chose to lose his hair and cut off the beard he’s been growing since last May, he said: “In November 2015, after Iris was getting pain in her right shoulder blade and different medical people saying it is muscular, she went to see another doctor, only for Iris to be diagnosed with secondary breast cancer.”

The news came as the couple were planning their wedding, which they had been looking forward to for months.

“Iris had appointments and tests to go too and we also had meetings to carry on the wedding plans,” continued Barry.

“Then in January 2016 Iris started her chemotherapy.

“As a result of this treatment she could see her hair coming out more and more, so she shaved her head.”

After the couple married in April last year Barry promised that he would shave his head too, once the wedding and honeymoon was over.

During the honeymoon he gave his beard a final shave and had left it untouched until last weekend when it got the chop.

When asked if he’ll miss the beard, he said: “I'm not sure my wife won't miss it but I'll be glad to have the fringe cut.”

Barry is raising money for Second Hope, the only UK charity dedicated to those living with or affected by advanced breast cancer, also called secondary, when the cancer has spread and is incurable.

The charity aims to provide hope and strength by raising awareness, providing support and funding research.

Having started fundraising on Christmas Day, Barry has already raised more than £1,400.
