THERE have been a number of car crashes in Wiltshire this morning, thought to be related to icy road conditions.

Shortly after 7.30am, police were called to a crash involving one car on Common Road, between Malmesbury and Foxley.

The vehicle had flipped and was blocking the road but was recovered by 9.15am.

At approximately 4.30am in the morning officers were called to a collision at Crane Furlong, Highworth, after a Ford Ka slid on ice.

Police are urging residents to drive carefully, particularly in rural areas where roads are unlikely to be gritted.

Due to budget constraints, only 25 per cent of the county’s roads are gritted when a frost is anticipated, meaning residents in rural areas must drive to the conditions.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Driver, please take care out on the roads in Wiltshire today.

“Heavy fog and icy roads in some areas are making driving conditions difficult.

“We have attended a number of road traffic collisions across the county this morning.

“Fortunately, nobody was injured in any of these collisions, but we’d like to remind motorists to be vigilant, use the appropriate lighting, keep your distance and allow extra time for journeys during these conditions.”
