NARROW roads in the centre of rural villages are no place for lorries and Sherston is a testament to that.

HGVs have been using a grass area called the Triangle in the centre of the village as a turning point when they’ve got lost.

This has resulted in benches getting destroyed, walls being knocked down and the verge being wrecked.

The parish council, after much lobbying, has got Wiltshire Council to fund some improvements to the area and not a minute too soon.

The plans were originally going to be quite minimal, however in the time it took Wiltshire Council to consider their options, another HGV stormed over the Triangle, doing yet more damage.

So the new plans are for improved signage and a defensive block for the verge.

Whether these changes will have an effect, it is yet to be seen.

Certainly there is ultimately nothing stopping a 40-tonne lorry crashing over the Triangle if it still wants to, regardless of the defences put in place...

Only time will tell but this is another example of how local campaigning can bring about important changes to village communities.
