RESIDENTS in Malmesbury been receiving the same suspicious call from suspected scam artists.

Unsuspecting homeowners have had phone calls from people pretending to be from BT Openreach, asking for access to their computer to fix a broadband fault.

The caller then asks people to log onto a particular website which could have given the scam artists access to the computer.

Robb Hancock was one of the recipients of the scam call and was told that his broadband was running slower than it should.

“They said my neighbours in the area were having issues also to try and make it more convincing,” he said.

“Because I work in the industry, I knew it was a scam.

“They tried to get me to go to a website which then gives them access to your PC.

“After telling them that we didn't get broadband from BT, they then got very angry and assertive.

“They ended up hanging up on me but I can see how someone not aware may fall for this kind of thing.”

Clare Stokes also received a similar call from someone pretending to be from BT Openreach.

The caller said that there was a problem with her broadband line and that someone was accessing it.

She said the call was “more credible” than other scam calls she had received in the past.
