ONE of Malmesbury’s most prolific and popular snappers is putting on a stunning showcase of his photography of the town.

Robert Peel has been taking photos of the town over the past seven years, many of which have featured on the front pages of the Standard and in national newspapers.

No matter how early in the day or how torrential the rain is, Robert has let nothing get in the way of capturing the town at its best.

He is currently exhibiting large prints of some of his favourite shots in the town hall for residents to enjoy.

Speaking about why he started photographing the town, Robert said: “When we first moved to Malmesbury we picked up leaflets and purchased books and guides about Malmesbury.

“I noticed that the quality of photographs were generally poor and did not show the town as its best.

“I set out to change that and make the images freely available.”

Now with thousands of pictures of the north Wiltshire town, Robert hopes to inspire people to get out walking around the town to see it in all its glory.

“It strikes me that, with the exception of dog walkers, people do not get out and walk very much,” he said.

“I hope the photographs will inspire people to get out more often.

“It is notable that, when my picture appear in the national newspapers, I receive numerous calls and emails from all around the country.

“These are usually people that used to live in Malmesbury and they miss it.

“It is clear that people do not quite appreciate what a special place it is until they move away.”

The exhibition starts today at the John Bowen Gallery in the town hall and runs until December 15.
