LAST year’s mayor of Malmesbury has handed over more than £2,500 to charity.

Councillor John Gundry raised the money through two charity events held during his mayoral year.

The Mayor’s Charity Blues Night was held in March and his charity cabaret evening in April, bringing in about £2,750 in total.

Money was also raised through collections around the town and at WOMAD Festival, as well as some of the proceeds the Jazz Society’s Jazz Cream Tea.

Cllr Gundry said he was very grateful to all who helped with the fundraising or contributed to the appeal.

The money was donated to Carer Support Wiltshire, a charity which helps carers to access support, services, education and training.

It also provides respite for carers and ensure they have a voice in policy-making.

Speaking about choosing Carer Support Wiltshire as the beneficiary of the appeal, Cllr Gundry said: “Changes in demographics and government policy mean that more people, of all ages, are finding themselves caring for relatives.

“That is often a new and demanding responsibility and Carer Support Wiltshire provides personal help and support to a wide range of unpaid carers.

“The charity regularly holds ‘carer’s cafes’ to support the 250 carers registered in Malmesbury.”
