A TRADITION that has been in place for more than 90 years returns to Malmesbury this week.

The much-loved Malmesbury Carnival kicks off on Thursday night with the Athelstan Players Revue at St Mary’s Hall on Thursday from 7.30pm, as the town prepares for its month-long annual celebration.

This year’s carnival features an array of musical, historical and literary events as ever, organised by the hard-working carnival committee.

There are events on throughout August, culminating in the traditional Malmesbury Carnival Procession on Saturday, September 3.

Every year the carnival raises money throughout the month, which contributes towards supporting and sustaining many local causes.

Deborah Clogg, chairwoman of the Malmesbury Carnival committee, said she was looking forward to this year’s events.

“There are some really interesting, enjoyable and varied events on this year,” she said. “Truly something for everybody hopefully.

“There are lots of old favourites but one event that will be very special is a tribute night to Bob Browning, who sadly passed away this year.

“He used to present a nostalgia evening about the town every year at the carnival, so this year the nostalgia evening will take the form of a tribute to him.

“He was a historian of Malmesbury and collected lots of photographs which will be shown.”

The tribute evening to Bob Browning will take place on Wednesday, August 17, at the town hall at 7.30pm.
