CARS parking on a blind corner in Malmesbury are putting lives at risk, it has been claimed.

A number of cars have been parking across the pavement in Parklands, which has caused children and parents with prams to walk into the road on their way to school.

Residents have claimed they feel at risk when walking around the parked cars as they claim oncoming traffic would not see them until it is too late.

Sandra Butler, who lives at Parklands, says the situation is “an accident waiting to happen”.

“There are so many people with cars in the area it is impossible to park and not block someone in,” she explained.

“People who don’t know the area can come crashing round and there is always someone walking down there."

Parklands resident Emma Ponting lives in the front of the house where the cars have been parking.

She has two children aged two and six-months and has been forced to push her pram around the blind corner when cars have been parked there illegally.

“If I do use that road I always have to step out onto a blind corner because of the car in the way,” she said.

“So if a car came round the corner I would be hit if the driver didn't have quick reactions to stop.

“Sometimes they don't park right across the pathway and have half their car sticking out onto the road, but there is still no room on the path for a person to get through.”

Wiltshire Council say they have not been made aware of the issue and say that illegal parking on a pavement would be a matter for the police.

In response a spokesperson for the police said: “Wiltshire Police is not the lead agency regarding parking, unless the parked vehicle is causing an obstruction, in which case we would attend at the time the obstruction is occurring and ask the driver to move the vehicle.

“Police have the authority to do this provided that we are called at the time and the vehicle is still there when we arrive."

GreenSquare – the owners of the housing estate – have been approached for a comment.
