A WOMAN from Upper Minety has knitted a staggering 150 blankets for charity.

Liz Shrimpton, 74, started knitting blankets for Oxfam in 1994.

Since then she has knitted her way through hundreds of yarns of wools and raised thousands of pounds in the process.

Now on blanket number 152, Liz says she it started out as something to keep her hands busy.

“I’ve always supported charities in some ways and I found I don’t like to sit dazing at a TV,” she explained.

“After being widowed it was a good way of keeping my fingers nimble.

“I thoroughly enjoy it doing.”

Liz aims to complete a new blanket every month for Oxfam and has donated 46 in total to the Malmesbury branch.

She moved to north Wiltshire four years ago and it is estimated she has raised more than £500 for Malmesbury Oxfam in that time.

Christine Holdway, Malmesbury’s Oxfam shop manager, described Liz’s contribution to Oxfam over the years as “remarkable”.

She said: “All I can say is what a wonderful bit of dedicated work she has done.

“Even when she goes on holiday she takes her knitting with her.

“I think her achievement and quiet contribution of her time and effort over many years is quite remarkable.”

There are currently two of Liz’s blankets in Malmesbury’s Oxfam, waiting to be snapped up.

The shop can be found at 7 High Street.
