WORRIED residents are calling for changes to a "dangerous" road in Malmesbury before there is a serious crash.

They want action at the junction of Old Railway Close and Webbs Way.

A fence recently put up at the corner of the two roads has created a blind spot when turning right out of Old Railway Close.

And, because cars park on the junction, vehicles turning right into Webbs Way are forced to drive on the wrong side of the road, risking being hit head-on by oncoming traffic.

Malmesbury Town councillor Julie Exton has launched a petition which she will hand to Wiltshire Council to demand action.

“We’re trying to at least put some parking restrictions there, as there are no parking signs or anything at the moment,” she said.

“I’m worried about young children – it’s too dangerous in some places for them to even cross.

“We just need something to ease the big problem there before something serious happens. They could maybe make it into a junction so drivers can’t zoom straight round it.

“We’ve had lots of suggestions coming in and a lot of support on the issue."

Malmesbury resident Chris Harvey is one of those hoping to see changes at the junction.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” he said. “People come flying around the corner where kids could be crossing, going to the park, and as cars park either side of the road at the junction, people are forced onto the wrong side of the road."

Chris is a firefighter and believes the parking in the area could cause prevent engines from accessing the road.

“Parking out of Reeds Farm is a joke,” he said. “When the school’s in use, people park all around it.

“You wouldn’t even be able to get a fire engine down there at times.

“It’s dangerous as you have to get out of there quick when you’re on call.”

Cllr Exton said the petition will be supported by anecdotal evidence of the dangers of the junction.

“We’re recruiting someone who lives in each road to go round to neighbours to see if they’d like to sign it," she said. “We’re appealing to anyone with photos or stories of incidents at the blind spot to send them to us so we can use them as evidence to Wiltshire Council.
