NINE out of ten children grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies, so Wiltshire Council have teamed up with Change4Life to encourage them to get active this summer.

Change4Life, an NHS scheme to help promote fitness and health in children, along with Wiltshire Council are working with Disney to help children get active through the Shake Up campaign.

Shake Up is a series of ten minute games and activities aimed at giving children a fun way to get their necessary daily exercise.

Most children are not getting the 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity recommended per day, with just 21 percent of boys and 16 percent of girls currently meeting the recommendations.

Every ten minute burst of activity can make a real difference and helps towards children getting the 60 minutes they need each day.

To celebrate the campaign, Wiltshire Council joined forces with the Summer Reading Challenge to host two free Kid’s Dance Shake Up with Storytime events at Salisbury Library and at County Hall, Trowbridge.

Maggie Rae, Wiltshire Council corporate director said: “This is a really fun way for children to get active. We all know how much children love Disney.

“Hopefully they will also get their friends together and get involved in as many of the activities and games as possible.”

Jonathon Seed, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for libraries, said: “It’s always lovely to see children engage so passionately with stories, and events like Shake Up story time and the Summer Reading Challenge really capture their imagination.

“If they help children pick up more books then that can only be a good thing.”

More than 650,000 people have signed up to the Shake Up activities nationwide and there is still time to get involved.
