THE Garden Open Day at Upper Chelworth Farm and Chelworth Farm Nurseries raised over £400 for the Save Leigh Church campaign.

People enjoyed tea and cakes in the gardens and bought plants to help contribute to the total.

The Save Leigh Church campaign was set up to keep the church afloat following expensive repairs it required early last year.

“After all our roof and belfry repairs, the Church had essentially run out of money,” said Hugh Thomas, Treasurer of the Parochial Church Council.

“So we decided to be proactive to raise money and awareness, so that we could be ready when more essential repairs arrive and also so that we can carry out some improvements to make the building more useable by the community.

“This year we have purchased a portaloo and we are now applying for permission to reopen a bricked up doorway, which will be a bonus as a fire escape and give direct access to the open churchyard area.”
