A SPRING fete in Stanton St Quintin saw visitors and volunteers pour into the village in their hundreds for a day of fun on Saturday.

Among the highlights were a group of youngsters from the village’s primary school who put in a strong showing to beat the adults at the tug of war and a handsome dog named Gizmo took the prestigious Best in Show award at the dog show.

Villagers, visitors and volunteers from 9Regiment at Buckley Barracks enjoyed the sunshine, games and barbecue, throwing sponges at those in the stocks and visiting the stalls across the field.

As well as toffee apples, cream teas and candy floss a few adults also enjoyed a pint of real ale and a few fruity Stanton Summer Cocktails.

Secretary of the Stanton St Quintin fete Michelle Fairgrieve said the turnout and enthusiasm at the event were brilliant She said: “We had about 400 or 500 people and this was probably our best event ever.

“It was actually a jubilee party that some of the villagers arranged that was held on the sports pitches, and it has sort of become a yearly thing now.

“We wouldn’t be able to put on anything like the same event without the support of the barracks and we would like to say a big thank you to them.”

The fete will make donations to the mobile chemotherapy unit Hope for Tomorrow and to the Army Family Welfare service at Buckley Barracks out of their takings from the day.

Ms Fairgrieve said that the donations were still being added up from the main event but was delighted to reveal that the collection for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal had raised a total of £130.
