MOTHER-of-two Jacki Sors is set to walk more than 60 miles from London to Brighton so that children in Malmesbury can enjoy the magic and adventure of books.

Mrs Sors, 43, is hoping to compete the 100k trek in less than 24 hours in a bid to raise £1,000 to equip a new library at St Joseph’s Primary School.

She said: “People of my age grew up with books but many children today instead have iPhones and iPads.

“I’m raising money to buy books and bean-bags for a new school library to help encourage the children there to enjoy the magic and adventure of books, just like we did.”

Mrs Sors, a customer services operative at Dyson, has two children at St Joseph’s, Noah, eight, and Ben, six.

She decided to have a crack at the annual London to Brighton walk when the school came up with plans to move the library into a larger room.

She has already undertaken the 26.2 mile marathon-length Moonwalk in aid of breast cancer, but is now determined pound out more than twice that distance – 63 miles in all.

She has been training for the event, which takes place on Saturday, May 23, by walking around Malmesbury during five and six hour sessions in the evenings and on her days off.

Her longest walk so far has been 35km – just under 22 miles – around Westonbirt Arboretum.

Her husband Thomas, who also works at Dyson, is an ultra-marathon runner. “But even he thinks I’m insane,” she said.

Mrs Sors went on: “I am quite nervous. I know it’s going to be a killer. It’s a very long way and its going to be tough, but I am determined to do it.”

The vast majority of participants will be walking for major charities and aided by various support personnel.

Mrs Sors will be pretty much on her own, although her husband and sons will be cheering her along the route.

After the weariest day of her life she is hoping to walk across the finishing line sometime on the Sunday morning holding aloft the St Joseph’s School flag.

“I’ll be carrying it for the last few minutes,” she said.

Jane Hickson of the school PTA said: “Jacki’s doing an amazing thing for the school and the children.”
