POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a crash on the M4 that left a 69-year-old woman with life changing injuries.

At 4.05pm on Friday Police were called to a crash involving a beige Citroen C4 on the M4 westbound near junction 17 for Chippenham.

The car, driven by a 71-year-old man from south Wales was travelling in lane three between junction 16 and junction 17.

Police said that the driver appeared to have lost control, and veered from lane three to the hard shoulder, before smashing into a barrier, with the car ending up across lanes two and three.

The M4 was closed for four hours while a police investigation was carried out and an air ambulance landed on the road to take the passenger, a 69-year-old woman from south Wales, to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

The man suffered minor injuries while the woman suffered a fractured sternum and leg injuries. Both are believed to be making progress.

Any witnesses to the crash who have not yet spoken to police should call PC Hutton of the Roads Policing Unit on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
