ENTRIES are now open for the 2015 Sherston Boule and Carnival.

This annual 128 team event sees Sherston’s High Street transformed by a team of volunteers who put up pistes, or territories, for a boules tournament with participants from as far afield as Wales and France.

The weekend starts on Friday night when teams converge on the village and spend their time in local pubs catching up and preparing for the battle to come.

On the Saturday morning volunteers heroically set up the pistes at 5.30am before the fun starts and the matches begin.

In its heyday the event saw almost a week of festivities associated with the tournament but it has shrunk to a more manageable size over the last few years.

Current chairman James Pyle said that he hopes to emulate the success of last year’s competition.

He added: “Over and above that we want to go back to the old days and put on some other events like a quiz or a fete.

“I came to Sherston 15 to 20 years ago and never played before, but I was roped into the pub team.

“I would love to see more people from Malmesbury, Tetbury and across north Wiltshire get their applications in. There’s a lot of fun to be had in Sherston and it would be great to see some new teams.”

The cost will be £20 for any team which is drawn with unsuccessful entrants being placed on a reserve list.

Most of the places will be reserved for local teams, whose captain resides within the five Parishes of Sherston, Alderton, Luckington, Foxley and Easton Grey.

As well as the hordes required to make up the 128 teams organisers are still looking for sponsors, who will receive one team place each and advertising space on a piste for their support.

Applications for this year’s event on July 11 will close on April 11 with the selection of teams expected to be announced on April 22.
