YOUNG filmmakers from Malmesbury are to premiere their film about Wiltshire soldiers in the First World War on February 5.

The film, directed by Daniel McAleavy, tells the story of the fighting at Mons in Belgium and Le Cateau in northern France, which was the first British military engagement of the war.

The film crew travelled to Belgium and France on the hundredth anniversary of the battle and filmed where the men of the Wiltshire regiment and other British soldiers fought German troops one hundred years ago.

The team also followed scouts from Chippenham, who represented Wiltshire and the UK at a series of commemorative events and followed their re-enactment of the retreat from Mons to Le Cateau.

Their film, funded by a £10,000 National Lottery Grant, will premiere in Malmesbury’s Town Hall on February 5 at an event devoted to the history of Wiltshire and Malmesbury in the early days of the First World War.

The event starts at 7 pm starting with the premiere of the 50 minute film and then followed by a talk by local historian Charles Vernon about the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in the early stages of the War.

Tickets for the evening are £7 and are available from the Athelstan Museum.
