SESSIONS at the seventh iteration of the Malmesbury Abbey Skate are already selling out with the event due to take place from 10am on February 18.

The 12th century former Benedictine Abbey in the town will be transformed from a church to a skatepark, welcoming hundreds of young people over the February half term.

After the normal Sunday service on February 15 the congregation will remove their chairs and put down a protective wooden layer to protect the abbey's ancient stone flooring.

This year’s organiser is the curate of Malmesbury Abbey, Rev John Monaghan, who has been practising his scootering for the event.

He said: “This year’s Abbey Skate is our seventh, and a tribute to the commitment of so many volunteers, inspired to serve the local community, and to show God’s love and hospitality to everyone who comes through the Abbey door.

“The Abbey Skate is an action packed three days, with age-appropriate skate and scoot sessions for people of all abilities,” he added.

The event opens at 10am on February 18, runs until Friday, with demonstrations from professional skaters and scooterers, and a competition on Friday night.

Live music will also be provided at some of the sessions by Wiltshire singer-songwriter Emily McGrory.

Last year more than 600 young people tested the ramps, quarter pipes, grinding rails and trick boxes.
