FIREFIGHTERS in Wiltshire are backing a new scheme which could save lives.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is supporting a project which helps identify problems with large domestic appliances.

Register My Appliance has been launched by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA).

Those registered on the scheme receive information from manufacturers about problems with an appliance once the product has been in use for some time.

Manufacturers will then contact owners to get the fault corrected as quickly as possible.

Neil Chamberlain, the fire service’s home safety manager, said: “Everyone should take a few minutes to register their domestic appliances, as this helps to reduce the risk of fires and provides peace of mind.

"The system will mean that manufacturers have accurate records of who owns particular makes and models so, in the event of a safety alert or product recall, they can ensure that the right information reaches the right people in good time.

"Nationally, the fire and rescue Service has seen far too many fires involving appliances that have been subject to a safety alert or product recall but the owner has been completely unaware of the danger.

"This new scheme can only help to prevent such fires happening in the future.”
