DURING the centennial commemorations of the First World War the Standard has been marking the deaths of individuals from the Malmesbury area of North Wiltshire.

George Grey was one of 10 children born to Robert and Mary Grey. He was the couple's youngest son and had four brothers and five sisters.

Mr Grey, who was single, worked for the borough council but volunteered as an Army Special Reservist so received training before the war. He was sent as a replacement to 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment and arrived at the front on November 1st.

The Wiltshires were shelled and then attacked at Hooge on November 13th. Mr Grey was one of three men who were killed, aged 33. His body was recovered and buried in Ypres. It was not until December 10th that the news officially reached Malmesbury.

As the town’s first confirmed death, a memorial service was held for Mr Grey in the Abbey on December 23rd..
