THE Women’s Institute in Oaksey has reached a historic milestone, marking 90 years as a local group.

On September 11 members, family and friends came together in the village hall to celebrate the achievement with wine, cheese and a birthday cake.

A member of Oaksey WI for several years, Liz Fleming described the continued success of the group as an amazing feat and praised the community spirit which has kept the group thriving for so long.

As well as the anniversary of the group a long standing member, Nellie Bennett, was celebrating her own 90th birthday and thoroughly enjoyed the evening of live entertainment provided by Linda Warren.

The Women's Institute was set up in the UK in 1915 to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War and has now grown to become the largest women's voluntary organisation in the country with around 212,000 members.
