A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man who was rescued from a burning flat in Swindon last night.

The woman, 29, who is from the town and was arrested near the scene, is currently in custody. The man, aged 62, died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Det Ch Insp Sean Memory, who is leading the investigation said:
“We would like to hear from anyone who may have information that would assist us.

"I would like to thank many of the local residents who have come forward to speak to us, but if think you have information and haven’t spoken to police, we would urge you to get in touch.

"We are particularly interested if you saw anyone acting suspiciously earlier in the day, on and around Albion Street. The Fire Service quickly got the fire under control before it spread to other homes and removed the victim from the building."

Police were called to the fire at Albion Street at 9.16pm by Wiltshire Fire Service.

Crews from Stratton, Westlea and Swindon were called out at 9.12. They rescued the man from the first floor of the property and people were evacuated from neighbouring homes.

A fire service spokesman said the fire had started on the ground floor.

Fire investigators are now working with police to establish the cause of the blaze.

The post mortem is due to take place today and police are in the process of informing the next of kin.

Wiltshire Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
