Mel Duncalf receives her regional award from Rotary district governor Peter Davey
A BUDDING young chef has cooked her way into the national finals of the Rotary Young Chef 2008 competition.
Mel Duncalf from Cirencester was crowned Gloucestershire winner last Tuesday after impressing judges with her delicious menu of pan seared scallops on a bed of wild rocket dressed with smoked paprika vinaigrette.
The 16-year-old's main course of chicken breast wrapped in bacon with apricot stuffing with roasted vegetables and apple and raspberry crumble with fresh vanilla custard clinched the title.
Now in its fifth year, Rotary Young Chef, in association with Filippo Berio, encourages secondary school pupils to show off their creative culinary talents by preparing a healthy three-course meal for two.
Over 4,000 pupils entered the competition and Mel will now be battling it out for the national title at the final in London on April 19.
Richard Fox, the Gloucestershire Rotary club organiser commented: "We were amazed with the high level of entries that we received this year. It was an extremely difficult decision as all of the meals were delicious, but in the end we decided to award the prize to Melanie as she showed a really strong creative ability to turn a series of inexpensive ingredients into an exquisite tasting meal."
