FLOOD gates are up in Malmesbury this evening after the Avon bust its banks.

Flooding is reported in St John’s Street, at the bowls club and at the Flying Monk ground and more is expected as water levels rise following this morning’s downpour.

Roads into the town have been turned into lakes in places and the A429 is completely closed at the Kingway Bridge.

The B404 at Sherston is passable with care as is the B4042 at Brinkworth, while unrestricted country roads are badly affected.

Police are advising people not to venture out in their cars unless their journey is necessary.
