A 57-YEAR-OLD Bourton the Water man has today admitted causing a woman's death by careless driving in the Cotswolds more than a year ago.

David Clarke of Kings Meadow, Bourton, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to driving without due care and attention on the A429 near Moreton in Marsh on August 28, 2009, thereby causing the death of Maureen Stovell in a collision between his car and a motorcycle.

At an earlier hearing in August he had denied the charge and was to have stood jury trial today. But when he entered the dock his defence lawyer asked for the charge to be put to him again and he changed his plea to guilty.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC agreed to a request from defence counsel Charles Row for a pre-sentence report to be prepared on Clarke before he is sentenced.

Judge Tabor bailed Clarke to re-appear for sentence on the afternoon of November 12.

He told Clarke: "You have been told what the likely sentence will be, I'm sure. I cannot make any promises one way or the other, as you will appreciate."

At the earlier hearing it was said that 'momentary inattention' by Clarke led to the fatal collision.
