A MYSTERY good Samaritan has been praised for his part in saving a horse which fell through its horse box in Cirencester.

It was feared that the horse might not survive after its back legs went through the base of the horse box while travelling through the Love Lane Industrial Estate on Thursday, July 5.

Passers-by looked on as a local vet sedated the trapped animal while two further horses, also travelling in the box, were carefully removed and transported to local stables.

Part of the industrial estate was blocked off for more than an hour as Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue crews moved in and used a special rescue unit to hoist the sedated horse back up into the box.

Owner Harry Tucker, from Cirencester, said it was a traumatic ordeal for everyone involved and a huge amount of thanks was owed to a kind stranger, who selflessly leapt in to assist.

"He helped us to keep all the horses calm while we waited and then helped to move the horse with the fire brigade," Harry said.

"He just came out from nowhere and was amazing. He was wearing a high-visibility orange jacket but we don’t know him or what his name is."

Harry added that although it was too early to tell if the horse had sustained damage to its pelvis during the accident, the first signs were very good.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service now has a team specialising in large animal rescues, which rescued four horses across the county in its first week of operation.
