THE diamond jubilee cork has popped in Cricklade with the unveiling of a celebration wine and a limited edition commemorative plate.

Commissioned by the town council, the special items feature a symbolic mosaic design that will be used as a theme throughout the town’s jubilee celebrations.

The design includes the rare fritillary flower that Cricklade - Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions 2011 – is famous for.

Only 500 copies of the Royal Worcester commemorative plates will be issued and 900 bottles of the white Pinot Auxerrois celebration wine, which has been made in Wiltshire.

Along with the commemorative items the town will celebrate the jubilee weekend in June by installing a 12-foot diameter mosaic at Saxons Rest community garden on High Street, holding a 1950s style fancy dress dance and hosting a lighting of the beacon ceremony.

Cricklade Town Council chairman David Tetlow said: "We wanted to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the town council thought the most appropriate way to do that was with a permanent recognition, hence the mosaic."

He added that he hoped the celebration plate and wine would be something residents would value and enjoy.

To order commemorative plates, at £15 each, or wine bottles, at £7 each, visit the town council office or call 01793 751394.
