A BRAIN-DAMAGED Fairford man took his own life after struggling to find a job an inquest has heard.

The hearing at Barnwood Coroner’s Court in Gloucester was told Nathan Phillips, of Pleasant Row, hanged himself from a banister rail at his home while on the phone to his brother.

The 37-year-old had struggled to get a job in the building trade after a quad bike accident in America in 2007 left him with severe brain injuries.

A GP report said he suffered from memory loss and constant headaches and had only partial vision on one side of his face.

The court heard family members were convinced it was this struggle to get a job, along with a recent split with a girlfriend that led Nathan to commit suicide in the early hours of December 7, 2011.

In a statement his brother Justin Phillips, who lives in Cornwall, described a phone conversation in which Nathan said he was feeling down and had tied a rope into a noose.

The court heard that before he hanged himself he had told his brother he wanted the Pink Floyd song 'Time' played at his funeral.

Justin said he had received similar phone calls from his brother and the court heard that after the accident Nathan had taken an overdose, which did not cause harm.

It is believed that at the end of the phone call with his brother, Nathan took his own life.

"He said, ‘I love you brother,’ and then went quiet," Justin said. "I heard a shuffling sound and then gasping."

The court heard Justin called the emergency services and alerted his mum and stepdad, Lynn and John Firth, who drove over to Fairford from their Cheltenham home.

In a statement Mrs Firth said when they got there the house was locked, but her husband looked through the letterbox and saw Nathan’s hanging body.

PC John Ashley-Cox said when they had managed to get into the house, the body was checked and no signs of life were found. Police found nothing suspicious surrounding the death.

Coroner David Dooley recorded a verdict that he took his own life.
