THE campaign to raise a staggering £125,000 to repair a much-loved Cricklade building has been officially launched.

Trustees of the Cricklade Jenner Hall must raise the money or face the prospect of the well-used building being closed within eight years.

The roof timbers of the 350-year-old community building are in dire need of repair and if major renovation work is not undertaken soon, it could become so dilapidated that health and safety officers would not allow it to remain open.

Clive Smith, High Bailiff of Cricklade, unveiled a fundraising thermometer to rapturous applause from more than 50 residents who turned up to show their support.

The appeal was named "Raise the Roof" and trustees have set themselves the target date of July 2012 when the cash must be raised.

Fundraising co-ordinator Vicky McIntosh said it would be a "massive challenge" but she was confident of achieving the feat after seeing the level of support at the launch.

"It is a major task but I am not worried," she said. "The amount of support we received at the launch was a real boost.

"We have no choice but to reach our target. If we do not make it, the building closes, it is as simple as that. It is not an option to fail."

Supporters of the campaign also tucked into to a huge celebration cake, made to mark the appeal launch.
