A GENEROUS Cirencester man has said he was inspired by a four-year-old's campaign to give blood despite having donated more than 100 times already.

Bob Page, of Martin Close, was so moved by youngster Lola Willis, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in January this year, that this month he donated blood for the 112th time.

Since the Standard told last month of her campaign to get people donating, she has been contacted by many people who she has inspired to give blood. Mr Page's donation will be among more than 50 other donations that have come from her campaign.

Mr Page started giving blood when he was conscripted to RAF Wilmslow during his National Service in 1957 and he has donated at the maximum rate allowed - three times a year - ever since.

"It was either that or eight hours in the cookhouse, so it seemed the easiest option," he laughs.

"I’ve continued to donate ever since as I’ve realised the importance of donating blood in helping to save lives and the little trouble involved in doing so.

"I have moved around and have given blood in Bath, Oxford, Yorkshire and Cirencester, where I have lived for the last 22years."

There is no upper age limit to give blood and the 72-year-old said he intends to continue this generous act for some years to come.

"Upon reaching 70 I was informed that I could no longer carry on but after a short break I was told that I could, which is why I am still giving blood today," he added.

"If people knew how easy it is more would come forward. I think many are put off by the thought of it but really it’s nothing to worry about, and the tea and biscuits are nice as well."
