A STATE-OF-THE-ART hydrotherapy centre for horses has opened in Inglesham and is the first of its kind anywhere in the UK.

The Equine Service Centre is heaven on earth for horses, with facilities ranging from swimming pools to solariums.

Horses can visit for one-off appointments or as livery guests undertake a series of hydrotherapy treatments.

And owner Liz Newman is keen to attract all sorts of horses, whether it be ponies needing to get a bit fitter or seriously injured racehorses.

With several polo clubs based in the Cotswolds, the hydrotherapy centre can also deal with the frequently strained and pulled muscles of polo ponies.

The centre has only been open for a fortnight - but several animals have already been treated.

Liz said: "We have been in the Cotswolds for the last five years and have a team of show jumping horses.

"We always treated injuries by using hydrotherapy, but travelling to centres for different treatments was very time consuming and we wanted to set up a hydrotherapy centre where we could treat all sorts of things in this one place."

A treatment programme for laminitis - the second biggest killer for horses - has also been launched so therapists at the centre can learn about the affliction.

Liz added: "What makes us unique is that we are open to everybody - we can treat a really big cross section. All horses and ponies are treated according to their individual needs and receive the highest standards from our experienced team."

The hydrotherapy centre is situated at Middle Hill Farm about two miles south of Lechlade on a 50-acre plot of land.

It boasts a 42-metre long swimming pool, a safe exercise for horses suffering from bruised soles or those that cannot be shod because of foot injuries or hoof wall damage.

Liz said: "Swimming reduces the risk of developing stable vices by relieving the frustration of being confined to box rest for long periods.

"Swimming improves cardiovascular fitness so horses are better able to deal with the rigours of training and less likely to become injured."

The solarium, on the other hand, acts as a perfect relaxant after a swim and can keep muscles supple.
