NEXT week's Wilts and Glos Standard is a must-buy for people in Cirencester who want to walk down memory lane and re-visit the much loved town Carnival.
The Cirencester Carnival was the main annual event in the town, and with the help of local historian Robert Heaven, the paper will come complete with an eight-page pull out supplement containing fantastic pictures through the decades from the 30s to the 90s, when the Carnival wrapped up.
Each July, thousands would line the streets to watch a procession of decorated floats and then follow to the Carnival field in the Abbey Grounds for displays, competitions and fairground rides.
One event was at the heart of the Carnival, the competition each year to find a local woman to crown as “Carnival Queen”.
Over the years the Queen changed to “Fairy Princess” and at it close in 1994 with a nod to early stages of political correctness, “Princes” were also added.
Our supplement celebrates the Carnival Queen's and Fairy Princesses. Perhaps you will spot your Grandmother or mother in the pictures or maybe that child in the 70s wearing a crown and sash was you?
Make sure you pick up a copy of next week's Wilts and Glos Standard for your Cirencester Carnival supplement.
