STUDENTS enjoyed a visit to the Corinium Museum in Cirencester as part of Takeover Day, where they were asked to assume the role of curator and produce labels for gallery displays.

Children from Powell's School visited yesterday and each pupil received label writing training, before choosing an object and writing a professional museum label.

The visit gave pupils the opportunity to experience the world of work and take responsibility for presenting collections to the public.

Learning Development Officer Emma Stuart said it was lovely to welcome the children to the museum.

"It’s always nice to give children some responsibility in the community.

"Displaying their labels and drawings for the public to see will hopefully give the children a sense of belonging in their local museum and a feeling of ownership for the collections.

"Inevitably, they will be responsible for safeguarding our heritage for the future."

The labels will be on display at the museum for a fortnight from next week.

Cirencester College students also took over the museum as Creative Artists to assist with marketing in the museum.

The students have written blogs about their experience which will feature on the online professional’s magazine ‘Museums and Heritage Advisor.’

The Corinium Museum has been engaging children in 'Takeover Day' for nearly 10 years. It is sponsored by Kids in Museums, which provides certificates to young people that take part.
