THE Cotswold Hare Trail ended with an auction of hares after a popular six-month long event.

104 hares and leverets were auctioned by BBC's Paul Martin on Friday, October 6 at Cheltenham Racecourse Hall of Fame.

The auction raised more than £60,000. The leverets proved to be very sought after, with Cirencester artist Mike Smith fetching the highest prices.

The large hare designed by Cheltenham artist PJ Crook was the highest seller at just over £4,000.

New owners were delighted with their buys, with one buyer bagging three hare sculptures for her Cornish garden and another gaining seven hares to form his own trail within his business premises.

Several town hares have returned to their ‘homes' and others will be spotted around the Cotswolds.

Festival director Florence Beetlestone thanked everyone who took part.

She said: "Many hundreds of people are involved each year across over 20 Cotswold towns.

"It is a true community event celebrating the creativity of our area.

"It just gets bigger and better! Plans are already well under way for 2018."
