  • HILARY Cottage Surgery is urging all teenagers born between September 1, 1998 and August 31, 1999 to have the Men ACWY vaccine, which provides protection against meningitis and blood poisoning caused by a highly virulent strain of Meningitis W bacteria. Older teenagers and new university students are at higher risk because many of them mix closely with lots of new people, some of whom may unknowingly carry the meningococcal bacteria at the back of their noses and throats. Parents should encourage their teenage child to have this vaccine, even if they have previously had the Men C vaccine. Contact Hilary Cottage Surgery or, for more information, visit nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/men-acwy-vaccine.aspx#teens

  • THE September meeting of Lechlade Town Council was well attended by members of the public. The council invites comment from the public for the first 10 minutes and for five minutes at the end of all its meetings. The increased interest for this meeting was largely due to the tragic accident in the Market Place the week before and the issue of heavy goods vehicles using the town as a major route was on the agenda. Several people from all the main routes through the town described their concerns over personal safety, noise levels and the sheer vibration threatening the structure of their homes. Suddenly it was apparent that this was a problem shared by most rather than a few. The increase in heavy speeding traffic has damaged the road surface so that drain covers have sunk and this has exacerbated the problem. Keith Salway, chair of the highways group informing the Lechlade development plan, explained that the traffic-calming measures were to be implemented as soon as possible dependent on plans and funding. There are ways in which you can help.
  • First, if you have concerns about the traffic passing through the town, be it the volume of traffic, the heavy lorries or speeding, please note these and send them in bullet-point form to Ginette James, clerk@lechladeonthames.co.uk and these will passed to Cllr Ray Theodoulou who will present your views to the county council.
  • Second is by volunteering to be a part of the speed-monitoring group. The more volunteers there are the lighter the load.
  • If a few more volunteers come forward, the police will hold a training session here in Lechlade rather than having to attend a session in Cirencester. There were assurances that the training is not onerous. In addition the town has software that will identify lorries over the length limit that come over the Ha’penny Bridge, another rule that is frequently abused. If you feel that you can spare a few hours here and there to do this valuable job please send a one line email to Ginette James, clerk@lechladeonthames.co.uk. She will be delighted to hear from you.
  • THERE will be a Jumble Sale in aid of the rebuilding of the Memorial Hall on Saturday, September 30 in the pavilion. Please take your unwanted goods along between 10 and midday. Good quality clothing, bric-a-brac books, cakes and plants are all great but unfortunately no electrical items can be accepted. The sale will begin at 1.30pm. For further information call 01367 252379.
