BARNARDO'S has launched an urgent appeal for volunteers to support some of the county’s most vulnerable young people.

The Gloucestershire Young People’s Advocacy Project aims to give children a louder voice in decisions which affect their lives.

Managed by Barnardo’s on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council, it works with those aged from five to 21 years old.

Their experiences include being in care or a care-leaver, having a disability or being the subject of a child protection plan, or needing help to make a complaint.

Barnardo’s advocacy is managed by a small team of staff but the service hopes that a pool of trained volunteers will enable it to reach more young people.

Barnardo’s team manager Eileen O’Toole said: “Our staff have achieved some truly amazing results and made a life-long difference to so many vulnerable children.

“However, a bigger team will not only increase our capacity but it will also increase our diversity, which will make it easier for some young people to confide in us."

Advocates are independent and speak on behalf of a child or young person, representing their views or encouraging them to find their own voice, and helping them to understand the process of a meeting.

They would need to commit to just a few hours each week, often meeting at a time and place of the young person’s choosing, and attending meetings with or on behalf of the young person.

Advocates could also be asked to make monthly visits to young people in residential units.

Applicants will receive a full induction and ongoing training, and regular supervision and support. Expenses will be paid.
