MEMBERS of Cirencester Hospital League of Friends and local midwives are calling for enthusiastic walkers to join them on a sponsored stroll through Cirencester Park to raise for three jaundice monitors.

Many babies experience some jaundice in the first few days and weeks at home, however, in some cases levels can rise rapidly causing permanent deafness and even brain damage.

The new £5,000 portable monitors are small and only need to be pressed against a baby’s skin to give a reading. Currently, if it’s suspected that jaundice levels may be high, a blood test needs to be taken causing distress to both baby and parents.

The monitors can be used by midwives in local clinics or in the baby’s home.

The sponsored walk will take place on Sunday, October 1 from 10am, with participants to walk between three and 10km.

Entry is free either by registering at gloshospitals.nhs.uk/WalkforWards or by calling 0300 422 6738 but please let them know that you are raising money for jaundice monitors.
