A HOLIDAYMAKER from Cirencester has described hearing "everyone screaming and running outside" when an earthquake hit the Greek island of Kos.

Ellie Thompson, 23, was on holiday with her mum Mandy when they were woken up by the earthquake on Thursday night, which has left at least two people dead.

"I was actually asleep in my bed and then I could hear this slight vibration, and then it got heavier and louder, and then I realised something was happening and I was getting quite scared," Ellie told the BBC.

"But we tried to stay quite calm.

"Everything started vibrating on the sides, things were falling off the tables. It was like a vibrating sound.

"It got quite violent and you could hear everyone screaming and running outside; that's when we knew it was something more serious that was happening."

Thousands of people, including hundreds of British holidaymakers, were affected by the large quake, which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale.
